Supervision
with Dr Liza Messing

Providing supervision and support for professional development has been one of the lasting joys of my professional life.

My stance is enabling, warm, direct and spacious.  I aim to accompany you on your journey with your clients and in your career to better understand yourself, your clients and your capacities.

I offer CAT supervision both individually and in groups.  I am also available for broader clinical supervision to support a number of clinical approaches for those working in private practice.

My Experience

I am an ACAT accredited CAT senior supervisor and am on the BPS Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (RAPPS).  I have been providing supervision for around the last 18 years so have built a robust understanding of this exchange and the processes needed to ensure it offers a rich, productive and safe space.   I have contributed to CAT teaching on both CAT and clinical psychology training courses.  I have also worked as a tutor and marker for CAT practitioner courses so have both an intellectual and applied knowledge of the model.

I have offered individual and group supervison to CAT psychotherapists, therapists and trainees, as well as the full range of mental health professionals including psychologists, doctors, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists.  Alongside CAT I have considerable experience working with CBT, Group Analytic and Psychodynamic frames, and bring this breadth into my clinical thinking.

My Style

The foundation of my approach to supervision is to build trust and to develop space for appropriate professional vulnerability and learning.  I offer both structured and unstructured space, depending on the needs in the moment.  I am fortunate personally to have had a number of supervisors myself, which has allowed me to understand that the joy of CAT lies in its ability to marry structure and theoretical coherence with the individuality, personality and passions of each therapist.  As such I take into consideration what you bring that is your authentic personality, as well as your own struggles and relational pulls.  I also acknowledge the scaffolding provided by your professional discipline which you will bring with you into your CAT learning.

My Offer

I am available for those with private practices in CAT or those who work in other modalities but wish to support their practice with a relational perspective.  I offer both individual and fortnightly group supervison for CAT trained and CAT curious professionals working in private practice.  I am also available to organisations to provide individual or group CAT supervision for staff, either CAT trained or CAT curious. As a senior supervisor I can also provide supervision for those undertaking CAT supervisor training.

I generally offer supervison online, though occasionally may be able to offer face to face, circumstances depending.  I am based in London.
